25 June 2023- The Philippine Embassy in Egypt hosted a reception for members of the diplomatic community, international organizations, Egyptian government officials as well as private and business partners to celebrate the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
In his speech, Philippine Amb. Ezzedin Tago noted that 126 years ago or on 12 June 1898, revolutionary general Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine Independence. On this day was the first time the Philippine flag was displayed, and the national anthem was played.
Amb. Tago also highlighted the strong relations between the Republic of the Philippines and the Arab Republic of Egypt which has now lasted for more than 77 years. The Philippine Embassy in Egypt was the first Philippine mission to be established in the Middle East and Africa.
Amb. Tago also thanked the Egyptian government for its continuous humanitarian positions, especially during the recent conflicts in Sudan and Gaza.
The Guest of Honor, Amb. Ahmed Shahin, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed his congratulations for the occasion. He stated that Egypt was among the first countries to recognize Philippine independence through the Treaty of Friendship between the Republic of the Philippines and Egypt which entered into force in 1956. He looked forward to the continued warm relations between the two countries.
Other notable guests were the Egyptian MFA Chief of Protocol Amb. Nabil Habashy, the Dean of the Diplomatic corps, and ambassadors of the various diplomatic missions including the ASEAN missions in Cairo.
Throughout the night, “Love the Philippines” tourism videos were played. And a special table with Filipino food was set up. The attendees were introduced to the Philippine version of the rendang, chicken adobo, pansit, pastel, turon, daral, and buko pandan.- END
